HistoryIn January 2001 a local church, St Michael’s, held coffee mornings using Fairtrade products, and soon after started to host Traidcraft parties, having received a grant from the local World Development Movement group. Teignmouth Fairtrade Friends was formally created in 2002. We should mention that there had been in the years prior to 2001 some excellent work by individuals in Teignmouth to promote Fairtrade. This had a significant influence in making the Teignmouth initiative happen, and so we are greatly indebted to those early committed leaders. In 2003 the Friends group adopted a constitution and its committee became a steering group. It has had regular monthly meetings since. In October 2005 they succeeded, the town being presented with a certificate by the Fairtrade Foundation. The Mayor of Teignmouth, Councillor Geoff Bladon accepted the certificate on behalf of the town from TFF Chair Pat Bray. They are shown holding the certificate during a ceremony at Bitton House, Teignmouth in October 2005. The Mayoress, Linda Bladon, is seated behind.
What happens in the future depends on the continuing goodwill of the townspeople. |
